The Kaikoura ranges are a line of steep mountains along the South Island East coast, rising out of the Pacific. You can drive or train along their sheer black walls with the Pacific Ocean waves pounding the stone beaches on the other side. The ocean is deep here, and marine life normally living far out to sea can come close to the land. Seals, penguins, and the mighty whale live here. Boat trips out to view the largest of all animals are a highlight of Kaikoura and are included in some Thrifty Tours. You should also try the local specialty food - crayfish (lobster to some). Half way between Christchurch and Picton, Kaikoura is an excellent rest point and offers the visitor some unequalled attractions.
